Introduction
In 2018, EKTEC Corp partnered with Buses Armenia S.A. to introduce an advanced open payment system on 31 buses serving intermunicipal routes 24, 25, and 33. This implementation allowed commuters to use bank cards and contactless technology to pay fares on routes connecting the towns of Calarcá, La Tebaida, and Armenia in the Quindío region.
Project Overview
EKTEC Corp’s OPCS Transport solution was deployed on Buses Armenia S.A. to create a cashless, user-friendly transit experience. Over 18 months, riders could pay fares using contactless technology or bank cards with contact chips.
Promotional Incentives for Users
To encourage the adoption of bank card payments, EKTEC Corp implemented a unique incentive: riders who completed nine payments using a bank card received the tenth ride free. This rule, designed in collaboration with Buses Armenia S.A., increased adoption of the cashless system and offered a clear benefit to frequent riders.
Impact on Riders and Operations
- Simplified Payment Process: Riders could pay fares with a simple tap, eliminating the need for cash handling.
- Increased Usage of Cashless Payments: The free-ride incentive boosted cashless payment adoption, benefiting both riders and transit operations.
- Versatile Payment Options: The system accepted both contactless and chip-enabled bank cards, allowing flexibility for users.
Public Awareness
To raise awareness about the new system, buses displayed visible stickers and informational materials promoting acceptance of Visa cards and contactless payments. These promotional materials reinforced EKTEC Corp’s commitment to creating a user-friendly, cashless experience.
Conclusion
The implementation of OPCS Transport on Buses Armenia S.A. marked a significant step forward in the evolution of public transit in Armenia, Colombia. By introducing reliable, cashless fare collection options and incentivizing frequent users, EKTEC Corp helped create a smoother, more efficient commuting experience for residents and visitors in the Quindío region.
